CHENEY LAKE – We now have the name of the 60-year-old woman killed when a home exploded and burned Sunday near Cheney Lake. She has been identified as 60-year-old Mary Lou Hemmy from Independence, Missouri. She was found in the rubble after the explosion and fire. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three others in the home were located by emergency officials upon arrival and had burns and abrasions on them. These were the resident of the home, 53-year-old Melissa Glass Settle, who was taken by Midwest Lifeteam Helicopter to Via-Cristi St. Frances Regional Medical Center in Wichita and is listed in critical condition. Also found was her daughter, 23-year-old Susan Hoover, who resides in Oklahoma City. She was also taken St. Frances, after being transported there by Haven E-M-S. Also transported to St Frances by ambulance was 27-year-old Daniel Sigg of Andale who is also listed in fair condition.

The explosion was first reported around 12:10 p-m, Sunday, when Haven, Cheney and Pretty Prairie Fire Depts, along with Haven E-M-S and Reno County Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to 26001 Outwest Road, which is on the northeast edge of Cheney Lake. When emergency service units arrived, they found the two story home had been leveled and was on fire.

There’s no indication of foul play and neighbors advised that a new water heater had been installed recently in the home.
