More than 25 families with young children attended Match Day in order to share the joy of giving. Many parents remarked about the great opportunity to have an important conversation with their kids about giving back to the community.
• An elementary school aged brother and sister in the Treece family gave $1.90 in change in a clear plastic cup and gifted it to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Reno County. The two kids are “littles” and just wanted to give back to the organization that has helped them.
• Lauren Ollenburger received money from her grandparents following churchconfirmation with the suggestion that she should give it away to deserving individuals. Lauren chose to give on Match Day and her gifts benefited the Cancer Council and Hutchinson Animal Shelter.
While simply driving through Hutchinson, a Colorado woman was compelled to give at Eagle Media Center, after hearing the on-air coverage of the event. She chose to give to Cause for Paws and the Children’s Emergency Shelter. Match Day provided a great opportunity for networking about nonprofit staff members who serve this community. During the day, Ray Hemman, bicycling enthusiast and employee of USD 308, met Major Mungai of the Salvation Army. The two discussed the empty lot west of Salvation Army and how it might be better used as a walking path. Since then, the conversation has blossomed and the Vitality Team has shown interest in supporting the project.
