KINGMAN (AP) – A Kingman County Judge has found enough evidence to send the case against a former police instructor accused of killing his wife and setting fire to their southern Kansas home to trial.

Judge Larry Solomon determined that there is probable cause to believe that 35-year-old Brett Seacat should be tried for first-degree murder in the April death of 34-year-old Vashti Seacat.

The Wichita Eagle reports that an autopsy found a wound just behind and below her ear. A Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent testified Wednesday that Vashti Seacat also had wounds that could have come from rounds from a pistol that “cooked off” from the heat.

The defense has indicated that they bleieve that Vashti Seacat may have committed suicide on April 30, prior to the home being caught on fire, but family and friends say she wouldn’t do that and that she was seeking a divorce from her husband and had filed the papers 16-days before the fire.

Vasti’s body was found inside the home after the fire was extinguished, and reportedly a gun was found near the body.

Bret Seacat and the couples two kids managed to make it out of the home. Seacat has told authorities he attempted to rescue his wife, but there were no indications that he had.

Seacat had been employed as an instructor at the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center near Yoder where he taught child abuse and neglect, serious offenses and fatalities, traffic enforcement, collision investigation, prisoner transport, cultural awareness, officer survival, SFST and defensive tactics. Prior to working at the KLETC, he was a deputy for the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
