The Reno County Health Department is now reporting that four cases of rabies have been reported in the county so far this year. Three were in skunks and one in a cow.

They remind everyone that the disease is preventable in humans and animals. They say that skunks and bats are the common animals that test positive for rabies. You and your animals can be infected by a bite, scratch, or contact with saliva from an infected animal.

Have your pets vaccinated is number one. If your bitten or scratched, seek medical attention and report it to your doctor, the health department or animal control.

If your animal is bitten, contact your veterinarian for advice.

Also, don’t handle unfamiliar animals, even if they appear friendly. Sick animals should be reported to animal control.

You should bring in pet feeding bowls at night to discourage stray animals from coming near your home and pets.
