Freshman Lead Lady Dragons to Fifth-Place Finish At Wichita State

AUGUSTA– Freshmen finished in the top six positions on Saturday for theHutchinsonCommunity Collegewomen’s cross country team as the Lady Dragons finished fifth in the college division at the Wichita State University J.K. Gold Classic at Raft Golf Course.

The Lady Dragons scored 146 points with an average time of 17 minutes, 40.35 seconds over the 4K women’s course.Hutchinsonwas the third-highest finishing junior college team in the college division. Both college and university runners ran at the same time. Cowley won the college division with 49 points.Butlerwas fourth overall.

“The girls ran as good as what I expected,”HCChead coach Dave Smith said. “It was a good start for such a young team. Now we look to start improving our times and moving up a few places in each meet.”

Freshman Maria Fernandez was the top Lady Dragon runner on Saturday. She finished 49th overall and 17th in the college division with a time of 16:43.62.

Freshman Diosha Johnson was 22nd (59th overall) in 17:01.64. Freshman Rebekah Sweet was 31st (74th overall) in 17:50.49. Amber Boos was 36th (85th overall) with a time of 18:16.61. Taylor Stewart was 40th (91st overall) in 18:30.79.

Other Lady Dragon performances were: freshman Shanna Prescott (44th college/97th overall) with a time of 18:44:33; sophomore Alexys Davis (51st college/109th overall) with a time of 19:32.95; and Jessica Smith (113th overall) in a time of 20:20.24.

The Lady Dragons will compete in the Friends University Invitational on Saturday at the Kansas Coliseum.

RACE NOTES – Former HCC cross country runner Annelle Chestnut finished 27th overall forKansasStateUniversity with a time of 15.39.12.
