HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old man arrested by police Tuesday was before a magistrate judge Thursday morning where he was told of the potential charges the state could file against him. Chase Coble was jailed for suspicion of aggravated arson and illegal possession of explosives.

He was apparently experimenting with plastic and chemicals and it got out of hand. Police say he had the chemicals to make black powder, but he claims he wasn’t doing that. He asked for a bond reduction during the court appearance, but Assistant District Attorney Andrew Davidson was opposed, stating that no matter what he was doing, the chemicals he had were all toxic and volatile. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen made note of the chemical burns he had on his chest from prior experiments and that he may have been researching such things as the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, and the two Boston Bombers.

She not only denied the request for a reduction, she raised the bond to $25,000.

Coble will be back in court on June 30 for the formal reading of any charges filed by District Attorney Keith Schroeder, who will be prosecuting the case.
