HCC volleyball sweeps Butler

Redshirt freshman Kyann Eslick pounded down a match-high 17 kills to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of the Butler Grizzlies on Wednesday at the Sports HCC VB vs ButlerArena.

Hutchinson maintained its spot in the lead pack in the Jayhawk West with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 victory, snapping Butler’s five-match winning streak.

The Blue Dragons improve to 10-5 overall and remained one-half game ahead of Seward County and Colby in the Jayhawk West standings with a 6-1 league record. Butler falls to 9-7 overall and 1-6 in the Jayhawk West.

Hutchinson will now play No. 15 Tyler at 9 a.m. on Saturday and No. 2 Iowa Western at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Sports Arena.

Eslick hit a season-high .521 on Wednesday to lead the Blue Dragons with 17 kills on 23 total attacks. She also added a solo block. Eslick had five kills in a dominant first set and six in a third set where the Blue Dragons had trouble putting away the Grizzlies.

Running a 5-1 offense, freshman setter Nicole Rutherford posted a season-high 38 assists with three kills. Rutherford spread the wealth around as seven different Blue Dragons recorded kills.

Freshman Page Hiebert hit .625 with five kills on eight swings. Freshmen Patricia Joseph, Shania Werner and Nina Pevic all had four kills.
