GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team middle tandem of freshman Shayne Haley and sophomore Cassie Wiley both had .500 hitting percentages to lead the Lady Dragons to a 3-0 Jayhawk West victory over Garden City on Thursday night at the Perryman Athletic Complex.
Hutchinson (12-18 overall), improved to 8-5 in the Jayhawk West with at 25-10, 25-10, 25-22 victory over the Broncbusters to sweep the season series with Garden city and remain in fourth place in the league with one match to play. That one match is against fifth-place Dodge City next Wednesday at the Sports Arena.
HCC has a one-game lead and a victory over the Conquistadors this season. A win over Dodge City would clinch a home first-round Region VI match against the same Dodge City team on Nov. 1. A loss to the Conqs would tie the two teams and tie-breakers would have to be used to see which team would get the home court in the postseason opener.
Haley had eight kills and hit a .500 to lead HCC. Wiley added six kills with no attack errors and a .500 hitting percentage. Wiley had three individual blocks to lead a six team-block effort by HCC.
Freshman setter Haley Young had another good offensive night with five kills on .357 hitting and no errors to go along with 29 set assists.
Defensively, the Lady Dragons were led by freshman libero Paige Forrester’s 12 digs. Freshmen Jade Nelson and Emily Oberlin had nine digs each.
The Lady Dragons dominated the first two sets before getting a push from Garden City in the third set.
Hutchinson will meet Dodge City at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena. It will be Sophomore Night and it will be the Lady Dragons’ Toys For Tots Drive night. The team is collecting new, unwrapped toys for Toys For Tots, a group that helps less fortunate children have a good Christmas.
