Hutchinson Community College freshman forward Melissa Heatherington was named the Verizon Wireless/Jayhawk Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week after breaking a single-game goals and scoring record last week.
Heatherington, a 5-foot-7 forward from Burnley, England, broke two team records and tied two others in Hutchinson’s 12-0 victory over Pratt at the USD 308 Athletic Complex.
Heatherington broke single-game records for goals in a game (6) and points in a game (12). She tied single-game records for goals in a half (5) and points in a half (10).
After her four-goal outburst against Hesston College on Monday, Heatherington now has a team-high 10 goals and 20 points through the team’s first five games.
Heatherington is the second HCC player in the first three weeks of the season to earn conference player of the week honors. Two weeks ago, sophomore Pearl Slattery earned the weekly award.
Heatherington is now eligible for NJCAA National Player of the Week honors. That award will be announced on Wednesday.
This is the second year that Verizon Wireless is sponsoring the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week Award.
