Human skull found near Cheney may be a souvenir from World War II

WICHITA – Officials investigating the finding of a human skull near Cheney learned that the former owner had buried the skull on the property prior to moving in 2010.

The skull had been in their possession since it was left on their parents door step in Circleville, Kansas, on Halloween night in 1949.

Attempts were made by the family to have the skull identified in the late 1970’s. The family was informed then that the skull was of Asian descent and was most likely a World War II souvenir.

Investigators have shared their findings with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the case is now transferred to that jurisdiction.

It started on January 29, when Cheney Police were called to 737 East Second in that city when potential buyers of the property found the skull while conducting a walk of the grounds.

Cheney Police then contacted the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office who then began the investigation, and led to where things stand now.
