Hutch Man Arrested After Pointing Gun At Six People And A Sheriff’s Officer

A 25-year-old Hutchinson man faces six counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and criminal possession of a firearm.

Austin L. Lemonds of 3200 Garden Grove Parkway, Apartment 5-C was arrested early Wednesday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at six people who apparently live with him in the apartment. In fact, according to Hutchinson Police Detective, Tyson Myers, there were more who were living there, mostly younger people.

Officers were dispatched to the location on the report of a possible hostage situation and Reno County Sheriff Deputy Rick Newton was close by and responded. Lemonds apparently pointed the gun at the officer, but dropped it quickly.

Lemonds had been paroled from prison in April of last year after serving time for a drug conviction out of Rice County. Because of that conviction, its illegal for him to have possession of any weapon.

He made a first court appearance on the charges Thursday and bond was set at 40-thousand dollars.

His case will return to District Court next Wednesday if not sooner, once the state files formal charges.
