A 25-year-old Hutchinson man charged with aggravated battery for allegedly severely beating his own mother was bound over for trial Wednesday afternoon.

Joseph Lewis Jr., apparently became upset over a comment his mother made to him while they were arguing over a hair-cut he didn’t like. He became upset and pushed her in a chair and then began punching her with both fist. It was estimated it could have been as many as 10-to-15 times.

The victim admitted on the stand that she had been drinking the day of the incident and that she started it. But, she also testified that she had fractures to her nose and forehead. She was initially taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, then later went to Wesley Medical Center for further treatment because of fear that her eye might separate from the socket. She was released from Wesley early the next morning, but later in the day went to an eye specialist in Wichita. While on the stand, she admitted there were no visible scars now from the attack.

Hutchinson Police Officer Terry Martin testified that when he saw the victim at the hospital, her face was swollen and bloody. He also testified that he interviewed Lewis once he was located and allegedly admitted to what he did to his mother. The alleged crime occurring back on January 29.

Lewis kept his head down through most of the hearing and showed no reaction when bound over for trial. His Attorney, Kelly Driscoll told the court that there have been no plea offers from the state, but Senior Assistant District Attorney Steve Maxwell says he would recommend the low number in the sentencing grid box if Lewis would plead at charged.

Lewis will be arraigned on October 7, in front of Judge Trish Rose.
