HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 32-year-old man was arrested by police after dispatch took a woman’s call stating that a man was at her home and believed him to be using drugs. She said he was also armed.

The woman also stated that John Oquenda may be in possession of a stolen truck. Police began looking for the suspect and found the truck abandoned. It had not been reported stolen, but they couldn’t get ahold of the owner.

Police then spotted Oquenda walking in the 900 block of North Monroe. When they tried to make contact with him, he allegedly ran, running between houses and, at one point, went over a fence. They eventually caught him in the 1000 block of North Monroe. While retracing his steps, police say they found a 9mm handgun.

He was arrested for suspicion of being a criminal in possession of a firearm and interference with law enforcement.

It’s unlawful for him to have a firearm because of prior felony convictions for theft, five counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and possession of drugs. Those convictions go back to 2005 and 2009.

He’s jailed on a $3,000 bond and should be back in court next week for the reading of any formal charges.
