A 43-year-old man charged with allegedly having a large quantity of drugs when the Reno County Drug Unit did a search of his home tried to get his bond reduced Wednesday, but Judge Joe McCarville denied the request.

Arnoldo Garcia-Serrano is charged of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, conspiracy to distribute meth, possession of cocaine with intent to sell, two counts of no tax stamp, and 9-counts of unlawful use of a communications device, namely a telephone.

The defense argued that his bond should be reduced from the current 250-thousand dollars because his family cannot afford to post the bond as is, but the state was opposed saying he is a danger to the community and is looking at a long prison sentence.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton argued that the defendant bragged to having 10’s of thousand of dollars hidden away where law enforcement couldn’t find it. He argues that Garcia-Serrano is allegedly involved with the drug cartels in Mexico and arranges to bring the drugs to Hutchinson. He says he is actually taped making a drug deal.

The case here starts with a search warrant being served at a home at 619 North Plum in the early morning hours of July 9, of this year. Prior to the search warrant being served, DEU agents seized around 2-pounds of methamphetamine. He allegedly admitted that he arranged the pick-up and distribution of the drugs, this after he was advised of his Miranda rights.

During the search, they allegedly found around an ounce of cocaine and a large amount of cash, around 5-thousand dollars. He allegedly used his cell phone to make the drug sales. He also apparently has a hold with immigration officials.

Judge Joe McCarville agreed with the state that considering everything, the bond is appropriate.

The case is still pending a preliminary hearing and will come before the judge as part of a waiver-status docket at some later date.
