A Hutchinson man charged last week in a federal a gun case was denied a bond reduction in a drug case by Judge Joe McCarville.

Jason Casanova is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm after a felony conviction for a crime which allegedly occurred on Aug. 1st.

He was in court Monday for a meth case, and wanted a reduction of his 85-thousand dollar bond, so he could seek drug treatment. But, Judge Joe McCarville denied any reduction, at least for now, until he sees the results of a drug assessment, commonly referred to as a S-A-C assessment. The judge says he wants to know if in fact, drug treatment would even work in his case.

Casanova along with Kylie Hartman are both charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery in a separate case which allegedly occurred in June, the same month that Jennifer Heckel was murdered in her northwest Hutchinson home. The state dropped that same charge against a third person, Matthew Barnes.

If convicted on the federal gun charge, Casanova could face a maximum of 10 years in federal prison. He’s also looking at a significant amount of time in state prison if he’s convicted in the meth case, as well as the conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
