A 34-year-old Hutchinson man who used electronic equipment to make contact with what he thought was a 15-year-old girl for sexually explicits purposes was sentenced Friday.

Edward Rodriguez was given 32-months in prison by Judge Tim Chambers for one count of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a child. That’s the standard mid-range sentence both sides agreed to last month when he entered a plea in the case.

Rodriguez had been charged with attempted indecent liberties with a child and 10-counts of electronic solicitation of a child for sending photos of himself to the child, some considered very graphic. He was also charged with one count of lewd and lascivious behavior. But, the state agreed to drop all those charges with the guilty plea for the indecent liberties count. He has also agreed to serve the sentence, although hinted in court Friday he would like to receive some type of probation.

The case revolves around the belief by Rodriguez that he was in contact by e-mail and text messaging with a 15-year-old girl. But, it was Police Detective Scott Carlton who he was communicating with. When he agreed to meet with what he thought was the 15-year-old at a Hutchinson home, he was met by detectives instead.

Judge Tim Chambers disagreed with the defendant that he is not a danger to the community. When sentencing Rodriguez, he says you tried to solicit a minor, and that’s make you a danger to the community.

Rodriguez will be required to register as a sex offender.
