The cases against a 23-year-old Hutchinson man is on hold while the defense tries to work out a deal with the state on all of his cases.

Leonardo J. Velázquez-Vieyra who’s on community corrections for convictions of aggravated battery, theft, sale of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia for growing marijuana and no tax stamp could still be sent to prison because of allegedly violating his corrections.

He was in court Friday where his attorney, Bonnie Corrado indicated that she is still trying to work something out with the state and indicated that he has a hearing on other matters before Judge Joe McCarville next Wednesday. Judge Chambers told the attorney that if they work something out on all of these cases in front of Judge McCarville, fine with him, otherwise, they will rescheduled the hearing over the corrections violation.

Velázquez-Vieyra was arrested in October on charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and felony theft. The case apparently involves the mother of his child and started with a domestic dispute, where he allegedly held the victim against her will, caused injury with a vehicle, caused her to fear for her safety and allegedly take a vehicle without permission.

He also has four drug cases pending, and as we mention could face prison for cases going back to 2006, and 2009, one of which involves the shooting of a Hutchinson man, Jordan Thomas. Thomas and another man had shown up at an east-side Hutchinson apartment where Velázquez-Vieyra was staying, and Thomas was shot in the face with a shotgun. He lost his left eye as a result.

So, maybe Wednesday will be the day when we find out how all of these cases are proceeding.
