A 24-year-old man expected to go to trial Tuesday for causing severe injuries to a 2-year-old child entered a plea to an amended complaint charging two counts of aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated endangerment of a child.

Toby Hippen allegedly injured the child who was taken to a Wichita hospital and was allegedly paralyzed on the left side.

Police were dispatched to 910 E Sherman back on Monday July 18, 2011 for a medical condition where a child had been badly injured. The child was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, and later transported to Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita.

With the pleas, he’s expected to be granted some type of probation as opposed to prison.

He entered the plea on Friday according to Judge Tim Chambers and will be sentenced on March 23.

His sister is also awaiting sentencing after she avoided a second trial on charges of 2nd degree murder.

Brigit Hippen entered a no contest plea to involuntary manslaughter as part of an agreement with the state.

She had faced trial in association with the death of her 2-month old child, Karina Perez. The state had argued that Hippen was reckless when she placed a hair dryer on a counter near the crib her child was sleeping in, because of concern for the child being to cold. The child died from hyperthermia as a result, which occurred back on February 23, 2010.

She faces sentencing during a special setting on February 24, at 3 p-m.

However, she still faces trial for a separate case in which she is charged with felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor battery in a separate incident. The trial in that case is tentatively set for February 28.
