A 21-year-old Hutchinson man was in court Tuesday on charges of felony flee and elude, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, and other traffic charges.

Zachary Gibson saw his bond increased to four-thousand dollars when he appeared before Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen.

According to Reno County Sheriff’s Deputy Corey Graber, he was backing up another deputy on a traffic stop at 4 th & Herren Road Saturday evening. A black Dodge Extended cab pickup was westbound headed in the direction of the deputies. Graber alleges that the driver started to speed up and flashed his headlights at them and going an estimated 80-85 miles per hour when he passed them. He also allegedly honked and waived at them when he passed.

Graber then took off after the man heading west on 4 th Street to K-14 highway traveling at this point at between 100-to-108 miles per hour. They eventually turned south on K-14 to Blanchard and then west again. He allegedly ran the stop sign at Sterling Road and turned north. Graber says he then ran another stop sign at 4th & Sterling Rd., while traveling 100-miles per hour. The man identified as Gibson finally stopped at 95th & Sterling Rd., where Graber then ordered him from the vehicle. Gibson then allegedly laid on the ground and told the deputy that he had marijuana and a pipe in his truck. He also allegedly stated he was driving with an expired tag.

The deputy found a sandwich bag with marijuana inside on the drivers seat, but Graber alleges he found several other baggies and containers in the truck with marijuana residue. He says he also found a grinder with marijuana in it.

He says he ran, because he needed to talk to somebody and after being read his Miranda rights, asked if he could finish smoking his bowl before he answers any questions, the deputy said no. and he then stated he had nothing more to say. Gibson was then taken to jail.

He’ll be back on court on September 28 for a status hearing.
