GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The Salthawks went into the game versus Garden City Friday night expecting to run the football and control the line of scrimmage. That is exactly what they did. Hutchinson stopped the Garden City running game in its tracks to win 21-12 in Garden City. The Salthawks spoiled the Buffaloes homecoming for 2019.

The first quarter was scoreless, but Hutch had driven the ball to the Garden City 1 right as time expired. Dallas Chambers took it in from the 1 yard line and scored on the first play of the second quarter. The point after was short and wide right. Garden City quickly answered and the game was tied at 6-6. Garden’s point after missed as well.

Then Dallas Chambers rambled 79 yards on an option, but was tackled at the 1. Alec McCuan got the quick score right before halftime and Hutch led 12-6 as the two-point conversion failed.

In the third quarter, Hutch extended the lead to 19-6 and was able to force a safety in the north end zone as a snap sailed over the Garden City punter’s head to make it 21-6.

A Salthawk turnover allowed Garden City to score and quickly cut the lead to 21-12.  Hutchinson dominated defensively and the offense did enough to hold on for the 21-12 win.

Hutchinson (1-2) returns home next Friday to take on Salina Central, who won over crosstown rival Salina South 17-7 Friday night.
