HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An interesting mix of archaeology and the Bible is part of a HutchCC outreach class starting Thursday.

Ted Weis, pastor at the Congressional Church in Little River, will bring the Bible and archaeology together in a three-session class.

“We’re going to be looking at the story from Genesis to Revelations, the Jewish scriptures, then the Christian Bible and the New Testament,” Weis said. “We’ll be putting all that together with archaeology. It really illuminates our understanding of the story of the Bible.”

Weis says the time period for such findings is great, so those who participate in the classes will see the significant changes during the history of biblical times.

“When you read the Bible and it says Jesus sat down for a meal, what would sitting down to a meal look like?” Weis asked. “You’ll see artifacts about daily life in biblical times. Over the course of the Old and New Testament, we’re talking a span of 2,500 years, so you’ll see quite a bit of change in how people lived their daily lives.”

Weis says Jesus was only a small part of the total biblical time period, but it is possible to find links to Jesus and archaeology.

“When you’re digging for things in the dirt to find anything related to Jesus, it is almost like finding a needle in a haystack,” Weis said. “But you’ll be amazed, there are several items directly related to Jesus.” The most notable items brought up in the class will be various items connected to King Herod. Herod was said to love architecture and several of his building projects will be shown in the class, according to Weis.
