Police were forced to evacuate about 80 residents of the Washington Heights Apartments Tuesday night after authorities found more than they bargained for while investigating an unattended death.
Police and fire units responded to the center in the 2700 Block of North Washington when they entered the apartment of 76 year old Paul Wright who was deceased in his room.
But, police also found a number of dummy hand grenades and what appeared to be remnants of a pipe bomb.
The complex was evacuated and after some investigation it was determined that the devices posed no threat. Residents were allowed back into their apartments after about 45 minutes.
