HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council and Hutchinson Fire department took time this morning to honor five firefighters who fought through extraordinary circumstances to rescue a man from a burning structure last November.
Doug Reeves, Craig Walle, Nolan Carmine, David Goering and Edvar Aguirre were presented citations
for their bravery in rescuing a man from the second floor of a burning home.
It was during the Thanksgiving ice storm, Nov. 28, that fire crews were called out to a structure fire in the 500 Block of East C Avenue. When crews arrived, they entered the home, which was fully involved, and found a man on the second floor. Despite the icy condition, fire and heavy furniture blocking the escape, and other structures close by impeding their access to the victim’s location, crews were able to rescue the man through the upstairs window.
Although 47-year-old David Sprague succumbed to his injuries, the efforts by firefighters to save him were reasons for their recognition.
