HUTCHINSON, Kan — Although he has apparently been on the job since May 1, The City of Hutchinson announced Tuesday that John Wright is the new Hutchinson Zoo Director. Wright most recently held the position of Executive Director for the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown, New York. City officials say he brings over two decades of professional experience to the Hutchinson Zoo.
Wright started his career as a volunteer at the Kansas City Zoo. Having family in the area as well as the zoo’s mostly Kansas native collection were contributing factors to his interest in the Hutchinson Zoo.
Mr. Wright comments that “I was pleased to see how the community supports the quality of life for those who call Hutchinson home through the downtown beautification, numerous bike trails and the parks system. It is a natural transition to the zoo and our mission to inspire community involvement in furthering conservation education.”
City Manager John Deardoff says, “I’m really pleased that our community was able to attract such a qualified candidate in John Wright. John brings a wealth of experience and energy to the position.”
Since assuming his new duties May1, he has been making himself familiar with the staff, animals and community.
