A Hutchinson man taken into custody following a short car chase and eventual standoff at a local motel was arraigned on the charges Friday morning after he apparently earlier failed to appear.

Dustin Chaffin who also goes by “Dusty,” entered “not guilty” pleas through his attorney Alice Osburn Friday morning to charges of criminal possession of a firearm, felony flee and elude, interference with law enforcement, and driving while revoked.

Back on April 4, a Hutchinson Police Officer was investigating a report of an erratic driver. He spotted a vehicle that matched the description and pulled in behind the vehicle and the driver then sped up and fled from the officer and a short chase occurred in the south part of the city. Officers deployed stop sticks and the vehicle still continued to flee from officers. The pursuing officers determined the chase was becoming too dangerous and terminated the pursuit.

Then just after 5:30 a-m, officers received information from another law enforcement agency that a female was staying at the Hutchinson Inn, in Room 201, and was believed to be a known associate of the suspect involved in the pursuit.

Officers then made contact with a man and woman reported to be staying in this room. These two individuals were arrested on warrants through the Hutchinson Municipal Court.

An officer was clearing the room for additional people and when he entered the bathroom and allegedly found Chaffin hiding in the shower with a handgun. Officers then secured the area and negotiations were started by telephone. About an hour later, Chaffin surrendered to officers and was arrested for criminal possession of a firearm and felony interference of law enforcement. He was also charged with felony flee and elude and driving while suspended for the earlier chase.

Chaffin has served time in prison for drugs, burglary and criminal damage to property.

His original bond was 3-thousand dollars, but because he failed to appear last month for arraignment, bond is now set at 50-thousand dollars.

Osburn indicated that they do want a jury trial in this case, so a pretrial hearing was set for October 11, by Judge Trish Rose.
