HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man charged with aggravated arson after a fire damaged the Tierra Verde apartments last November managed to get his bond lowered Wednesday afternoon.

Timothy Broadfoot is accused of setting the fire back on Nov. 22, 2017. The charge is a level 3 felony with a maximum sentence of over 20 years.

The fire was discovered on one of the upper floors and was quickly extinguished. Hutchinson investigators are still listing the fire as “under investigation,” but did say they believe it was intentionally set. The amount of damage is estimated to be over $109,000, according to statements made in court.

The fire displaced about 20 individuals, who were aided by the Red Cross, at the time of the fire.

His attorney argued for a bond reduction over a medical condition that needs to be treated at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

The state argued against it, however, saying there is another investigation underway involving sexual exploitation of a child. That case is being investigated by the FBI. The only question is whether they’ll prosecute the case in Federal Court or refer it to District Court.

Broadfoot was jailed on a $45,000 bond, but Judge Joe McCarville lowered it to $22,500. His case is still pending a preliminary hearing.
