HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 31-year-old man arrested on March 29 on serious drug charges was back in court Wednesday seeking to have his bond lowered.

Brian C. Corkum is jailed on a $50,000 bond for manufacture of methamphetamine, or in the alternative, attempt to manufacture, possession of a precursor to manufacture and possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to distribute.

He was in court over reducing the bond, but under Kansas law, the minimum bond for a manufacturing charge is $50,000, and the state argued against any reduction. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen agreed and denied the reduction.

The case starts with a Hutchinson woman reporting she was threatened by Corkum. When police made contact, they apparently found three backpacks that contained items consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine, including a pot that contained what they believe was the processing of methamphetamine. They also found lithium metal, more lithium batteries, rock salt, drain cleaner and tubing.

The Reno County Drug Unit was called in and, based on their experience, they believed it to be a meth lab. He’s also alleged to have threatened to kill a woman at the home, as well as her son.

The arrest came in the 400 block of East C. The case is still pending a preliminary hearing.

He also has other cases pending, bringing the total bond to $55,500.
