HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Persistent winter weather is making for busy times at Hutchinson Salt Company.

The mine provides road salt to most of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Chicago.

According to Andy Bingham with Hutchinson Salt, the mine is taking out about 2,500 tons of product per day. The two shifts have also gone 60 days without time off to keep up with demand.

Bingham says they expect to keep those hours for another couple of weeks depending on the weather. The mine constantly has trucks moving in and out of the mine. The facility’s 250 rail cars have been in constant motion to move salt out to customers.

As far as salt supply goes for the city and county, Hutchinson Public Works reports it has about 800 tons of salt in supply. It usually takes about 80 tons of product to treat the city streets one time.

Don Brittain with Reno County Public Works says they are around 90 percent capacity right now. It takes about 125 tons of salt and 375 tons of sand to make one pass over the county’s 1,200 lane miles of road.
