The Hutchinson School Board Monday reviewed district results on science.

Each month, the board reviews academic progress in the district, focusing on a different area. Monday’s meeting examined district results on science.

Overall, district students tested in fourth and seventh grades as well as high school improved on assessments with 87.3 percent listed as proficient or higher, compared to 86.5 percent in 2009-10.

The district also uses ACT science scores as a benchmark. Of the 153 HHS students who took the ACT, the average science score was 22.2, up from 22.0 a year earlier.

Based on the data presented, however, the Board determined that reasonable progress had not been made in science because of dips at the high school and district level. Board members did commend progress that had been made at Hutchinson Middle School and Faris, Graber and Wiley Elementary Schools.

Also during Monday’s meeting, the board heard a Continuous Improvement Report from Avenue A Elementary School, approved an agreement for security and fire alarm monitoring, approved an updated Nutrition Services Program memorandum of understanding with Head Start, approved an out-of-state activity trip for welding students, and approved the December 2011 Treasurer’s Report.

They also held an executive session for 15 minutes to discuss negotiations.
