The Hutchinson School Board Monday failed to make any decision on whether they want to pursue setting up a virtual school.

After discussion, it was agreed that to open a virtual school, the district would need to spend the 2013-14 school year setting it up. Set-up includes hiring a coordinator, putting together the curriculum and marketing the school. Start-up costs are estimated at 124-thousand, 600-dollars with most of the cost paid out of the district’s local option budget in 2013-14.

The coordinator will explore several options for the school, including K-12 regular school year enrollment, summer school enrollment, adult high school diploma completion and possible extras including world languages and International Baccalaureate.

The virtual school would then become self-supporting through student enrollment during the 2014-15 school year.

During the discussion, the board also looked at options for the virtual school, including partnering with a regional service center.

For now the board tabled the matter.
