An inmate in the Reno County Jail was found dead in his cell last night. According to the Reno County Sheriffs Department, 54-year-old Richard Schumpert was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:45
p-m. Deputies started CPR on Schumpert, and he was transported to Hutchinson Reginal Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigation appears that Schumpert’s death was due to natural causes and that he had a history of medical problems. An autopsy will be conducted, and the KBI has been brought in to investigate.
Schumpert had been in the Reno County jail since Saturday on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal possession of a firearm.
Shumpert had previous convictions for aggravated battery, DUI, possession of drugs, domestic battery, and violation of a protection from abuse order. The aggravated battery case was from 2004 in Sedgwick County and the rest going to 2010 was in Reno County.
