Investigation Into Train Accident Underway

Train traffic was expected to return to normal along the Union Pacific Railroad route through Reno County after the line was shut down following the collision between two trains in the Oklahoma panhandle.

Authorities are still investigating the wreck which occurred around 10 a-m Sunday morning in Goodwell Oklahoma, about 60-miles southwest of Liberal. Three locomotives burst into flames and three crew members are still missing.

One train was pulling a line of cars carrying automobiles while the other was an intermodel train hauling containers when they hit head on. No word yet on whether mechanical failure on human error caused the crash. The wreck forced UP to reroute trains south from Kansas City into Texas, but spokesperson Mark Davis says that service disruptions in Reno County are minimal, which is of concern since the wheat harvest has just ended, and trains are hauling the harvest to various ports.
