The Reno County Jail Study Committee will meet again Tuesday July 10 and are expected to consider a number of issues, including whether to move forward with the 15-thousand dollar community survey relating to the bond issue.

They will also consider including funds for moving four county offices to the jail annex along with courthouse security issues and funds for renovation of law center space for additional offices and a relocated evidence locker as part of the bond issue.

The committee is expected to ask voters to approve a half cent sales tax to fund the 25-million dollar bond issue for the jail. The nice thing about a sales tax say officials is that those who visit the county and spend money here, would also pay the sales tax, meaning they would help pay for the new jail.

As we have been telling you, the county is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars now by housing inmates in other facilities, including Butler and Ford counties. Building a jail would eliminate that process, and would make it easier for jail staff to move inmates to and from the courts.

The plan is to build on land currently owned by the Kansas Department of Corrections located on the northeast corner of Blanchard an Severance. This would be just east of Carey Park.
