HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After several years at the helm at Hutchinson High School and nearly 30 years as a head coach, Tina Johnson has decided step down in order to take more time for herself and her family.

Johnson has been head volleyball coach at HHS since the start of the 2013-14 season. She took the Salthawks to their first post-season appearance in 18 years during the 2014-15 season. HHS was the Kansas Volleyball Association’s Class 6A Program of the Year that season. Overall, Johnson ranks 17^th for career wins in Kansas with a winning percentage of 70.4 percent. The Salthawks struggled this year, but finished strong at the end of the season despite a first round loss in the 6A sub state last Saturday.  The future looks good for Salthawk volleyball as the freshman class won the AVCTL title this year.

“I’m at a point in my life that I want to put family first,” Johnson said. “The opportunity to coach here has been an excellent experience. I am so grateful to have worked with the staff here.”

Johnson told her players of her decision Wednesday afternoon.

Kevin Armstrong, HHS athletic director, complimented the veteran coach.“We appreciate the commitment Coach Johnson made to the Salthawk family,” he said. “Coach Johnson built the program from the ground up. She spent timeless hours year round with young ladies of all age. Hutchinson volleyball is in a better place because of Coach Johnson.”
