DENVER (AP) – A Kansas woman has been sentenced to prison for Social Security fraud.

Federal prosecutors said Monday that 61-year-old Kimberly Ann Stenerson of Mankato, Kan., has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for making a false statement to the Social Security Administration.

The former Steamboat Springs, Colo., resident was accused of accepting benefits for a mentally disadvantaged aunt whom she had placed in a nursing home in Mexico, while telling Social Security officials the aunt lived in California and that she checked on her regularly.

She must pay restitution.
