KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City police have arrested a woman after finding her 10-year-old daughter locked in a filthy closet.

The Kansas City Star reports officers freed the girl after responding Friday morning to a call to a child abuse hotline. The officers reported that the girl was alone in the apartment inside a closet reeking of human waste.

The girl was taken to a hospital to be checked out. Officers later found the girl’s 29-year-old mother and jailed her on suspicion of child abuse. The mother’s live-in boyfriend was also arrested.

Two other children have been placed in protective custody.
