TOPEKA (AP) – Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says he’s seeking an investigation into the destruction of documents considered key evidence in a criminal case against a Kansas City-area Planned Parenthood clinic.

Schmidt disclosed Wednesday that he’s asked the Shawnee County sheriff to investigate and the county’s district attorney has agreed to handle any resulting case.

The documents were reports on individual abortions filed by the clinic with the state health department in 2003. A criminal case in Johnson County had accused the clinic of falsifying copies of the records.

But, 49 of the 107 charges against the clinic were dismissed Wednesday. The health department destroyed its copies of the reports in 2005. The attorney general’s office destroyed its copies of the records in 2009, under Schmidt’s predecessor.
