TOPEKA – (AP) Legislators are discussing the future of the network that provides broadband connections for schools, libraries and hospitals across Kansas.

The director of Kan-Ed, Jerry Huff, testified Tuesday at the Statehouse about the status of the system and reviewed a 2007 legislative audit.

The program was created in 2001. It has faced questions during recent legislative sessions over whether it is efficiently providing services, such as Internet-based services or distance
learning and video conferencing. Some critics suggest the system is competing with the private sector.

Legislators have discussed scaling back Kan-Ed’s scope and reducing its funding. A second meeting is scheduled in October when legislators will recommend any changes for consideration in the 2012 session.
