WICHITA – A 27-year-old Hutchinson man was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison for threatening the president of the United States.

Michael Scott Ramsey pleaded guilty to one count of threatening the president. In that plea, Ramsey admitted that on July 1, 2009, he wrote two letters that were delivered to the staff of Larned State Hospital in which he threatened to kill the president. In the first letter, he said “I am going to kill Barrack (sic) Obama, and this is Michael Ramsey telling you this.” In the second letter, Ramsey wrote, “I’ll take his life.”

In the fall of 2011, Ramsey underwent an evaluation at the Federal Bureau of Prisons Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. The evaluating team concluded there was no objective evidence that Ramsey suffered from a mental disorder or condition that rendered him unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions.

Ramsey is serving 43-months in state prison for violating his parole, but also removing a GPS device he was required to have attached to him as part of his parole.

He had served time in state prison for unlawful sexual relations with a minor for a case from 2004, paroled in that case back in April of 2011 in Harvey County, but absconded and a warrant was issued for his arrest on June 14of that same year. He was eventually found, but didn’t have the GPS tracking device on him which was ordered.
