TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment samples of recreational bodies of water for blue-green algae continues.

When harmful algae blooms are present, they in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism inform the public of these conditions.

A warning is issued for high levels of toxic blue-green algae have been detected and indicates that water conditions are unsafe and direct water contact, such as wading, skiing and swimming shouldn’t occur.

Based upon sampling results and established health risk levels, the following warnings are in place. The only lake in our area included is Memorial Park Lake, in Great Bend.

Logan City Lake, in Phillips County was upgraded from an advisory to a warning, as was
Warnock Lake, in Atchison County.

Of course you shouldn’t drink lake water anyway, but especially where there is a warning. You should also avoid swimming, wading or other activities with full body contact of lake water,
clean fish well, and consume only the fillet portion, and discard all other parts. Also, keep pets from having contact with or drinking lake water.
