TOPEKA (AP) – A Kansas House member says Gov. Sam Brownback should acknowledge that private meetings with Republican lawmakers at his official residence were a mistake.

Republican Rep. Charles Roth, of Salina, said Friday that Brownback should publicly promise not to have similar meetings in the future.

Roth attended the first of seven meetings in January at Cedar Crest, the governor’s residence. The events are being investigated by Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, a Democrat.

Legislators were invited to the dinner gatherings by committee, and almost all of them were Republicans, like Brownback. Roth said he believes the events violated the Kansas Open Meetings Act, although Brownback has said he’s confident they didn’t.

Roth said it would be responsible for Brownback to acknowledge the meetings were a mistake.
