TOPEKA, Kan. — The latest unemployment numbers released by the Kansas Department of Labor shows Hutchinson with an unemployment rate of 4 percent. That is for the month of May and is an increase over the April number when the rate was at 3.6 percent, but lower than May of last year when the rate was 4.6 percent.

Reno County’s number is at 3.8 percent, also a slight increase from April when the county was at 3.6 percent, but again lower than May of last year. The rate then was 4.6 percent.

There were 1,170 residents of the county looking for work this month with most of those living in Hutchinson.

Most of the surrounding counties also saw a slight increase with the exception of Kingman County. That rate actually went down slightly over April.

The state’s May seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.7 percent. This was down from 3.8 percent in April and from 4.2 percent in May 2015.
