HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A 39-year-old man made a first appearance on some fairly serious charges.

Kelly Bryan Stowell is accused of riding his bike away from Police Tuesday after they pulled into what they thought might be a drug deal in progress. They repeatedly asked him to stop, but he refused. He then at one point ditched the bike and then ran on foot eventually going into a home in the 300 block of East Sherman.

He claimed in court that he knew the residents, but they told police they didn’t know him and he is alleged to have pushed one of them, and punched another in the arm. He was allegedly in the basement of this residence and was taken into custody.

He allegedly had two pink Zip-Lock bags of methamphetamine according statements made in court.

Potential charges included aggravated burglary, battery, possession of methamphetamine and interference with law enforcement.

His request for a bond reduction was denied by Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen who was told of prior conviction for selling drugs and a conviction for aggravated failure to appear. Bond was left at $17,000.

He’ll be back in court on July 7, for the reading of any formal charges.
