HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 67-year-old man who entered “guilty” pleas to both counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child was sentenced Friday by District Judge Tim Chambers.

On the recommendation of both the state and the defense, John Robert Haney was granted a departure from Jessica’s law and sentenced to 155 months on each count. Judge Chambers then ran the sentences concurrent. That makes the sentence just under 13-years in prison, which District Attorney Keith Schroeder noted that with the defendant being 67, that could still be a life sentence.

Haney was arrested by Hutchinson Police Detective Scott Carlton for incidents involving two kids, ages eight and nine. According to Carlton, the sexual contact occurring over a three month period.

Prior to sentencing Haney apologized for what he did and to those he hurt. None of the victims were present at the sentencing Friday.

Had he been sentenced under Jessica’s Law, he would have been given life in prison with no chance of parole for 25-years.
