A 25-year-old Hutchinson man, convicted and sentenced to 96-months in prison for kidnapping and aggravated burglary after holding a McPherson family against their will, was bound over in Reno County District Court on a charge of trafficking on contraband in a correctional institution.

Andre Chatham is alleged to have been involved with bringing contraband into the Hutchinson Correctional Facility on July 16, of this year. The contraband being marijuana.

Prison officials say that he had visited with someone at the central unit facility and was on his way back to his cell. As is proceedure, the inmates are patted down in what they call the shakedown room. Officer Matthew Veithaler says he noticed something unusual with one of his boots. It apparently had a slit and inside were two rubber balloons which allegedly contained the drugs.

After Judge Joe McCarville found there was probable cause for him to be bound over for trial, he was also arraigned on the charges and was told he could be looking at an additional 31-to-136 months in prison is a jury convicts of the charge.

The case was transferred to Division 1 of Reno County District Court which is the court of Judge Trish Rose.

Chatham was convicted in a case in McPherson where he along with Michael Darnell Jackson allegedly broke into a McPherson home restraining four adults inside and then taking one of the men to an ATM where he was forced to empty his bank account.

Chatham and Jackson were captured later in the afternoon in two separate traffic stops by Hutchinson police, one at 9th & Keast, and one at 17th & Halsey.

Jackson was acquitted of all charges, while a different jury convicted Chatham.

Chatham was on parole for a 2003 conviction of aggravated robbery, and theft for another McPherson County case and had been released from prison in July of 2009, the same month as these crimes.
