HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 29-year-old man who held Hutchinson Police at bay back in December after stabbing a Hutchinson woman was sentenced Friday to 172 months or over 14-years in prison.

Toby Hippen was charged with attempted first-degree murder, or in the alternative, aggravated battery. He entered a plea to the battery charge, and the other charges were dismissed.

He forced his way into a residence of a Hutchinson woman and stabbing her repeatedly and then fleeing the scene. She was eventually taken to a Wichita-area hospital in serious condition.

He was later found at a home where he held police at bay, closing down a portion of west 5th street. He eventually surrendered without incident.

He apologized to the victim in court and knows he must be punished, while his sister sought mercy blaming his actions in part of his abuse of prescription drugs and alcohol. Judge Chambers in handing down the sentence noted the past violent acts.

You may recall Hippen as being convicted of causing severe injuries to a 2-year-old child. He was granted two years community corrections for aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated endangerment of a child.

He was discharged from corrections in that case in April of 2014.
