Hays, Kan. — According to Hays Police Chief Don Schiebler, the man Hays police found in critical condition following a fight early Sunday died of his injuries early Wednesday morning at a Wichita hospital.

Edmund Mike Benally, 33, Winslow, Ariz., was found lying in the parking lot of America’s Best Value Inn Sunday morning.

He was rushed to Hays Medical Center and then airlifted to a Wichita hospital.

Truman Begay, 22, Blue Gap, Ariz., is in police custody in lieu of a $1 million bond facing an aggravated battery charge due to the incident.

It is not clear if Begay’s charge will change now that Benally has died.
