Man jumps from Amtrak train in Stafford Co.

STAFFORD, Kan. — Authorities are still investigating why a 74-year-old man jumped from Amtrak’s f339f782-54f6-429b-9d63-648c3a637777Southwest Chief this morning in Stafford County.

Amtrak crews notified BNSF Railway dispatchers around 2:20 Monday morning while the train was stopped in Hutchinson and said that someone may have left the train. The man’s body was found about 100 feet from Main Street in Stafford.

It appears the man threw his luggage from the train and jumped. The Chief was traveling about 80 miles per hour at the time of the incident.

The man had indicated that he was getting off the train in Newton so he could take the bus to Wichita. His name has not been released.
