A 20-year-old Hutchinson man charged with a single count of abuse of a child was bound over for trial Thursday afternoon by Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen after a preliminary hearing.

Trevor Coleman is accused of the abuse while he was babysitting his girlfriends children and allegedly injured a 2-year-old girl. The child suffered a lacerated liver, and two broken wrist.

He claims he was just playing with the child which was one of three in his care. He admits he had the child facing down when he slammed the child on his knee, which they believe caused the injuries to the child’s liver. But, he says he wasn’t angry, but frustrated at one of the other kids and also the mother of the kids. But, detectives on a video shown to the court of one of the interviews clearly were skeptical, saying there had to be more force used then he claims. They say the force to child’s stomach was so severe that it pushed the child’s liver back to the spine, causing the laceration.

Coleman is also alleged to have thrown the same child in the air, about 8-feet according to the Hutchinson Police Detective Scott Carlton, but failed to catch the child, who then landed on the carpet. Coleman says he was distracted by one of the other kids. That’s believed to have caused the broken wrist. This occurring back on January 22.

Coleman says he didn’t tell his girlfriend what happened, saying in the video shown that had he thought the child was badly injured he would have. The child began feeling sick that Sunday evening, saying she was throwing up, and didn’t want to play anymore. The following day, the child was taken to the doctor, with the doctor then discovered the injuries. The child was then taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.

The defense contends there could be others who caused the injuries, including the child’s father, and even the mother. It came out in court that the child had other bruising and possible rug burns that were there prior to this incident. Defense Attorney Kelli Driscoll even got the detective to admit that the child has suffered a skull fracture in May of 2011.

there was also some question of how long it took the mother to get to a Wichita hospital, even though she knew the child had two broken wrist. Detective Carlton confirmed that the mother stopped to get taco’s before departing for the Wichita hospital. They estimate it took her as much as two hours to finally arrive at the hospital.

Judge McEwen found that there certainly could be other theories of what happened to the child, but agreed there was probable cause to send the case to arraignment and possible trial. This after District Attorney Keith Schroeder referred to what the defendant did to the child as a beating or torture.

Arraignment in the case will occur on May 7, in front of Judge Tim Chambers.
