A 20-year-old Hutchinson man charged with a single count of abuse of a child was granted a continuance of his trial Friday by Judge Joe McCarville who was covering the docket for Judge Tim Chambers.

Trevor Coleman is accused of the abuse while he was babysitting his girlfriends children and allegedly injured a 2-year-old girl. The child suffered a lacerated liver, and two broken wrist.

His Public Defender Kelly Driscoll argued for the continuance saying she needs more time to prepare for the case. District Attorney Keith Schroeder told the judge that the state is ready for trial and that he objected to the delay, considering another high profile case may end in a plea on Monday. He says if Michael Sherman doesn’t enter the plea, then he’s okay with the delay, but if he enters the plea, then he is opposed.

Sherman who is accused in a child sex case may enter the plea before Judge Tim Chambers on Monday. Both men were scheduled for trial on Tuesday, but ussually one is continued when there are two scheduled.

Coleman in his abuse case claims he was just playing with the child which was one of three in his care. He admits he had the child facing down when he slammed the child on his knee, which they believe caused the injuries to the child’s liver. But, he says he wasn’t angry, but frustrated at one of the other kids and also the mother of the kids. But, detectives on a video shown to the court of one of the interviews clearly were skeptical, saying there had to be more force used then he claims. They say the force to child’s stomach was so severe that it pushed the child’s liver back to the spine, causing the laceration.

Coleman is also alleged to have thrown the same child in the air, about 8-feet according to the Hutchinson Police Detective Scott Carlton, but failed to catch the child, who then landed on the carpet. Coleman says he was distracted by one of the other kids. That’s believed to have caused the broken wrist. This occurring back on January 22.

Coleman says he didn’t tell his girlfriend what happened, saying in the video shown that had he thought the child was badly injured he would have. The child began feeling sick that Sunday evening, saying she was throwing up, and didn’t want to play anymore. The following day, the child was taken to the doctor, with the doctor then discovered the injuries. The child was then taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita for treatment.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder referred to what the defendant did to the child as a beating or torture.

When the trial will be re-scheduled at this point is unknown.
